Ironwork for your Madinah home? Here's what you need

Madinah sits among the harrah, the black volcanic ground that gave districts like Al Harrah Ash Sharqiyah and Al Harrah Al Gharbiyah their names, and…

Before you ask for a quote

Blacksmiths price per square metre or per linear metre, so sizes and photos are half the job.

Size in metres

For a door, kreetal or fence: width × height in square metres. For a railing: the length in linear metres.

A picture of a design you like

A photo on your phone of a door or kreetal you've seen. The design changes the price more than anything else.

Where does water sit?

After the last rain, where did water pool around the iron? At the threshold? Under the gate? Those spots rust first.

Check the old welds

If you're repairing something: shine a torch on the welds and look for cracks or rust bubbling under the paint.

⚠️ An iron door or gate hanging off a broken hinge? Don't try to lift it on your own; the weight can injure you. Keep children away until the blacksmith arrives.

What wears iron out in Madinah

A first picture; the blacksmith confirms on site.

Rust after the spring rain

Iron painted without an anti-rust primer starts rusting from the first shower, especially at the ground and in corners. It gets cleaned back to bare metal, primed, then painted.

Faded, cracked paint

Strong summer sun breaks down the paint on gates that face it. Once it cracks, water gets underneath.

Gate has dropped and scrapes

A heavy gate on weak hinges, or a post that wasn't set firmly. New hinges or a stronger post.

A weld has come apart

Tack welds instead of a full weld, or rust has eaten round it. It's re-welded and painted.

Railing moves

The fixing into the tiles or wall has loosened. Dangerous, especially on stairs and roofs.

The lock won't line up

The door has shifted slightly. Adjust the hinges before swapping the lock.

What to choose for your home

Each type has its own price and way of measuring.

Iron doors and kreetal

House and courtyard entrances, roof doors.

  • Kreetal costs more than a plain iron door because there's more decorative work and welding.
  • Ask about the sheet thickness and the sections.
  • A large gate needs strong hinges or wheels.

Railings and fences

Stairs, balconies and roofs.

  • Railings go by the linear metre, fences by the square metre.
  • Agree the height, especially with children.
  • Ask how it will be fixed into the tiles or wall.

Repairs and welding

Hinges, failed welds, rust, door adjustment.

  • Most Madinah workshops have a mobile unit that comes to you.
  • The call-out has its own price, so ask about it.
  • Painting after welding should be included.

Keeping rust away

Before spring

In February, check gates and railings. Clean and paint any small rust spot before the March rain.

Dry it after rain

Wipe the bottom of the gate and the threshold if water has collected.

Oil the hinges

A few drops every few months, especially after the dusty season.

Refresh the paint

Sun-facing ironwork needs repainting every few years, before it cracks.

Ask the blacksmith

Get the answers in the written quote, not just spoken.

  1. Per square metre or per linear metre?

And what area did you measure? Measure together.

  2. How thick is the iron?

A much cheaper quote usually means thinner sheet. Get the thickness in writing.

  3. Is there an anti-rust primer before the colour?

That's the difference between a door that rusts after the first rain and one that lasts.

  4. Are fitting and painting included?

Making it in the workshop is one thing; fitting and painting at your home is another.

  5. How long will it take to make?

For a gate or kreetal, ask for a written delivery date.

  6. What's the guarantee?

On the welding, the paint and the hinges, each with its period.

Signs that need a question

One may pass; more than one, ask further.

Paints straight onto bare iron with no primer

It looks fine for a month, then the first rain brings the rust through.

Doesn't measure for themselves

If they work from your sizes and they're wrong, you pay for it.

Only tack welds on load-bearing joints

Gates and railings need full welds.

Wants the full amount before making it

A sensible deposit, and the rest after fitting.

Common questions

Why does iron rust in Madinah when it hardly rains?

Because the spring showers are enough, especially where water sits at ground level or the paint has no primer under it. Anti-rust primer is the protection.

What's the difference between kreetal and a plain iron door?

Kreetal involves more decorative work and welding, and is advertised in Madinah at SAR 300 – 600 per m², against SAR 150 – 350 for an iron door.

Does Laqeeni take commission?

No. You talk to the blacksmith directly and agree the price and payment; Laqeeni doesn't come between you.
