Quick checks before you call anyone

They take a few minutes and sometimes save you a call-out. Switch the AC off before you touch the filter, and leave anything electrical to a technician.

Remote and temperature

Make sure it's on Cool mode (not Fan or Dry), set lower than the room temperature, and no timer is on. Try new batteries in the remote.

Dirty filter

Open the front cover and slide the filter out. If it's grey with dust, rinse it with water, let it dry completely and put it back.

Tripped breaker

Look in your fuse box for a switch that has flipped down. Switch it back on once only. If it trips again, leave it off and call a technician.

Outdoor unit

Make sure it isn't covered, boxed in by things stored around it, or full of dust and leaves. It needs space to push the heat out.

Common AC problems in Riyadh homes

And what usually causes them. Only a technician can say for sure, but this helps you understand what they tell you.

Not cooling in peak summer

Often a dirty filter, a dusty outdoor unit or low gas. Low gas means a leak somewhere, so a refill without fixing the leak only lasts a while.

Water dripping indoors

Usually a drain pipe blocked with dust. A proper clean normally fixes it.

Strange noises or rattling

Often a loose fan or part. Don't ignore it; it tends to get worse.

High electricity bills

A dirty filter, low gas or a very low temperature setting all make the AC work harder. Cleaning and a sensible setting usually help.

Dust clogging filters after sandstorms

Fine dust blocks filters quickly. Check and clean them after every dusty spell, not just once a season.

Bad smell

Dust and damp built up inside the unit. It needs a full inside clean, not just the filter.

Trips the power

Don't keep switching it back on. Get a technician to check the compressor and wiring.

Ice on the pipes

Usually low gas or a badly blocked filter. Switch it off and let it melt before the technician comes.

Split, window or central: what's different when you hire

Not sure which you have? A split AC has a unit on the wall inside the room and a box outside. A window AC is one box set into the wall. Central AC has vents in the ceiling and no unit in the room.

Split AC

The indoor and outdoor units are joined by copper pipes.

  • Most AC technicians work on them.
  • For a new install, ask if the copper pipes and wall bracket are included in the price.
  • If the outdoor unit is high up or on the roof, ask if that costs extra.

Window AC

One unit fitted into a hole in the wall.

  • Ask if they'll clean it in place or take it out of the wall.
  • Taking it out is heavy work, so agree the price for that first.
  • Check the gap around it is sealed again afterwards, to keep out dust and heat.

Central AC

One large system that sends air through ducts in the ceiling. Found in some villas and larger buildings.

  • Ask if they've worked on central systems before. Not every AC technician does.
  • Duct cleaning is often a separate job from servicing the unit, so ask what's included.
  • Expect a price after an inspection, not over the phone.

When to get it serviced

Before summer

March and April are best, before the heat and before technicians get busy.

After dusty periods

After a sandstorm or a dusty week, clean the filters and check the outdoor unit.

Filter every 2–4 weeks

In summer, clean the filter yourself every 2–4 weeks, and have a technician do a full clean once or twice a year.

24°C is enough

Every degree colder uses more electricity, for very little extra comfort.

Questions to ask a technician

Ask before any work starts. A good technician won't mind.

  1. What's the price, before you start?

Does it include parts? Is there a call-out or inspection fee?

  2. What warranty do I get?

How long is the guarantee on the work and on the part? Get it in writing, even just on WhatsApp.

  3. Original or copy parts?

Ask which one they're fitting and what the price difference is, and ask them to write it on the bill.

  4. Is this a gas top-up, or are you fixing the leak?

Low gas means a leak. Ask where the leak is and whether they'll fix it.

  5. Can I see or keep the old part?

If a part is replaced, ask to see the old one before it's thrown away. You can ask to keep it.

  6. Can I test it before I pay?

Run the AC for 15 minutes and make sure it's cooling properly before paying.

  7. Can I see photos of past jobs?

Look at photos of past work and genuine reviews from earlier customers.

Warning signs of a bad job

One sign on its own doesn't prove anything, but take care if you see them.

Needs a gas refill every season

This usually means the leak was never fixed. Ask for the leak to be found and repaired.

Won't give a price upfront

If they won't name a price, or at least a range, before starting, think twice.

Wants full payment before starting

If you pay everything first, you have nothing left to hold back if the job isn't done properly.

Replaces big parts without explaining

Like the compressor. Ask why, get the price in writing, and compare it with the cost of a new AC before you agree.

How often should I clean my AC?

The filter every 2–4 weeks in summer, and a full clean by a technician once or twice a year, ideally before summer.

Why do prices vary so much?

It depends on the type and size of unit, where it's fitted (upper floor or roof), the type of gas, and any parts. Ask for the price before work starts.

Does Laqeeni take commission?

No. Laqeeni is a directory that connects you with the technician directly. You agree and pay between you.
