Wood in Taif homes: before you call the carpenter

Taif's summers are dry, its springs and late autumns bring rain, and Al Shafa and Al Hada get a lot of fog. Solid wood soaks up the damp and swells…

Before you ring: look at the door or wardrobe

A screwdriver and a good look will do. Don't plane the door or take apart anything heavy on your own.

When did it start sticking?

If it began after rainy or foggy days, the wood has probably swollen and will settle once the air dries. Don't rush to cut it.

The top hinge

Open the door and press it down gently. If it shifts at the top, the hinge screws are loose, and tightening them may stop the scraping.

Look at the gap

Close the door and turn the light off. Light showing through in one place only tells you which way the door has dropped.

Inside the wardrobe

Check the back panel and corners for marks or a musty smell, especially if it stands against an outside wall.

Door and wardrobe problems in Taif

What keeps happening here as the weather turns, and the usual reason. The carpenter decides once they've seen it.

Wooden door jams in the rain

Solid wood takes on spring damp and swells. If it happens every year, a carpenter eases the edge slightly and seals it, rather than cutting a lot off.

Small cracks in summer

Dry air shrinks the timber and opens cracks or gaps between boards. They can be filled and refinished.

Wardrobe door won't sit flush

The hinges need adjusting, or the panel has bowed a little. Most can be put right without replacing anything.

Swollen cupboard under the kitchen sink

Chipboard that has drunk water. Get the leak fixed by a plumber first, then the carpenter replaces the panel.

Door locked and the key's lost

A carpenter can usually open it without damage, then change the barrel.

Rest-house doors tired after winter

A rest house shut up for months sits in cold and damp with no air moving. Check the outside doors before the summer season.

Repair, or something new fitted?

Each is priced its own way. Know which you need before asking for a quote.

Repairs

Scraping door, hinge, lock, cupboard door, kitchen unit.

  • Send photos close up and from a step back.
  • Ask what the new part costs on its own.
  • If the sticking is seasonal, ask about sealing the edge instead of cutting.

Fitting or dismantling

New door, wardrobe, bedroom set, wooden kitchen, made-to-measure.

  • Send the measurements and number of pieces.
  • For made-to-measure, ask about the timber and how it copes with Taif's damp.
  • Ask whether dismantling and refitting a kitchen or bedroom is one price.

Looking after wood between seasons

Air the rooms in spring

Open the windows on sunny days after rain so damp doesn't get trapped in the wardrobes.

Wardrobes on outside walls

Leave a small gap behind them, as a cold wall collects moisture.

Oil or varnish every few years

A protective coat slows how much damp the wood takes in over winter and spring.

Tighten screws after summer

Dry months loosen them slightly. Tighten them before the holes wear.

Ask the carpenter

Send these before the visit; a capable carpenter answers them easily.

  1. Will you plane the door, or adjust the hinges?

Planing fixes it today but can leave a gap in summer.

  2. Which timber do you suggest?

For made-to-measure in Taif, ask about wood that copes with changing humidity.

  3. Priced per piece, or for the whole room?

Get it in writing before they start.

  4. Will you seal the edge after cutting?

A bare edge soaks up damp faster.

  5. Will you fix the wardrobe to the wall?

Important for tall units, especially with children around.

  6. And if it sticks again next spring?

Ask whether they'll come back to adjust it, and get that in a message.

Things that aren't reassuring

They don't always mean poor work, but ask about them.

Cuts a lot off the door on a wet day

Once the wood shrinks back you'll see a gap underneath.

Leaves the cut edge unpainted

It becomes the first place to drink in moisture.

Won't name the timber for made-to-measure

The material should be written in the quote.

Wants full payment before making anything

A deposit, then the balance after fitting, is easier.
