Buying tyres in Makkah? Read the tyre before the price

Tyres in Makkah work hard: tarmac that bakes in summer, climbs and drops inside the districts, and fast motorway runs to Jeddah and Taif. The market…

Four quick looks at the tyre, at home

Two minutes tells you whether you really need new ones, and which size to ask for.

The size on the sidewall

A code like 205/55R16: width, profile, and rim diameter. Snap it and message it over, and the shop can price the exact tyre.

The production date

Four digits in a small box, such as 1426 for week 14 of 2026. An old tyre can look new and still have hardened rubber.

Tread depth

Put a riyal coin in the groove. If the tread is very shallow, or the wear bars are level with the rubber, it's time to change.

Cracks and bulges

Hairline cracking from the sun, or an egg-shaped lump on the side: the lump is the dangerous one, so keep any journey short.

🛞 If a tyre bursts while you're driving, hold the wheel firmly and don't brake suddenly. Ease off gradually, pull onto the shoulder and put the hazards on.

Tyre problems common in Makkah

The heat and the roads here leave a clear mark on rubber.

Cracks from parking in the sun

A car left in the street all day in a Makkah summer has tyres that dry out and crack sooner. A shade or the shady side of the street makes a difference.

Pressure climbs by midday

Air expands as it heats. Measure in the morning while the tyre is cold, and use the pressure on the door-pillar sticker, not the maximum moulded into the tyre.

Uneven wear

Climbs, descents and tight turns in some districts wear the tyre edges. If one side has gone faster, the wheel alignment needs checking.

A blowout on the ring road

High speed, heat and low pressure: three causes together. An under-inflated tyre runs hotter than it should.

A cut in the sidewall

A sharp stone on the shoulder or a high kerb edge. Sidewall cuts usually can't be patched; the answer is a new tyre.

A flat spare

Many find the spare is low or past its date just when they need it. Check it before any trip to Taif or Madinah.

Chinese, Korean or Japanese?

The price gap is big; choose by how you use the car and how far you drive.

Budget (Chinese and others)

Cheapest option, fine for city driving.

  • One Makkah shop advertises from SAR 109 a tyre including fitting and balancing.
  • Check the production date and country of origin.
  • Find out what the guarantee covers.

Mid-range (Korean and other brands)

A balance of price and lifespan.

  • Published Makkah prices for Laufenn start around SAR 300 for small sizes.
  • Suits someone who travels now and then.
  • Compare the load and speed index with your original tyre.

Big names (Japanese and European)

Dearer, usually longer-lasting.

  • Bridgestone 205/55R16 from about SAR 390 at a Makkah store.
  • Ask about the dealer warranty.
  • Worth it if you do a lot of motorway driving.

Heat and roads: making tyres last

Every two weeks

Gauge the tyres at dawn, before driving warms them. Most petrol stations have air, and shops usually check it for free.

Before summer

Check the date and the cracks. A tyre past its best won't cope with July and August heat.

Before a trip

The Taif road has long descents, and the Madinah and Riyadh roads are long and fast. Right pressure, a ready spare and a jack.

After any hard knock

After a heavy jolt from a hole or a kerb, look over the sidewall and rim, and book an alignment if the steering drifts.

Ask the tyre shop

Clear answers protect you from a price that changes after fitting.

  1. Is VAT and fitting in that figure?

Some quotes cover the rubber alone; fitting and balancing get added after.

  2. What's the production date?

Ask to see the digits yourself before fitting.

  3. Is there a guarantee? For how long?

And who pays if a manufacturing fault shows up.

  4. Balancing included? And alignment?

Balancing is for the wheels, alignment for the steering geometry, and each has its own price.

  5. Do you have a mobile van?

Mobile tyre services work in Makkah; ask the call-out price first.

  6. Is the load and speed index right?

Especially for SUVs and pickups, it must match the car's handbook.

Tyre-shop warning signs

One is enough to make you ask more.

A 'new' tyre with a much older date

Ask why, or ask for a newer one.

A low tyre price, fitting never mentioned

The bill may grow later with balancing and valves.

Fits a different size without saying

It affects the speedometer, the brakes and the ride.

Patches a sidewall cut

That isn't safe, especially on motorways.

Figures from a tyre store's Makkah pages (2026 prices after the store's discount) and a Wali Al-Ahd tyre shop's post (May 2026); the starred row comes from a national price guide (November 2025). Common questions

How much are tyres in Makkah?

It depends on size and brand: Chinese from SAR 109 a tyre at one Makkah shop, Laufenn about SAR 300–660, Bridgestone about SAR 350–480 for common sizes (2026 prices with VAT).

Does Makkah's heat shorten a tyre's life?

Yes, along with how and where you park and drive. Check the date and cracks every year, and change it if the rubber has hardened or cracked, even with tread left.

Nitrogen or ordinary air?

Some shops recommend nitrogen as steadier in the heat. What matters more is checking the pressure regularly, whatever you fill with.

Does Laqeeni take commission?

No. The tyre shop or mobile van is paid by you, directly.
