Rough measurements and a few photos bring the first quote close to the real one.
Window, door, or where the shade goes. Write them in metres; the blacksmith re-measures before making anything.
A front that takes the afternoon sun wears its paint faster. Say so, so the right paint gets chosen.
If rain collects in the street or yard, or you're near a valley channel, tell the blacksmith so the bases go higher.
Especially for patterned, decorative doors. A picture saves an hour of explaining.
🚫 Don't weld or cut iron yourself. And if there's a flood alert, keep away from valley bottoms and call 911 if you're in danger.
These help you know what to ask for in new work or a repair.
Some blacksmiths recommend heat-resistant paint over an anti-rust primer for exposed iron. Ordinary paint under Makkah's sun fades and flakes fast.
Water pools at the foot of the gate after rain or washing the yard. A slightly raised base and drainage protect it.
Wrong slope or no gutter. Ask about the fall before it goes up.
Dangerous in a fire, especially in higher flats. Ask for one panel that unlocks and swings open from indoors.
Loose sandwich panels or missing screws. Tighten them early, before a panel blows off.
The door weighs a lot, and ordinary hinges won't carry it for years. Ask about bearing hinges.
Prices differ a lot from one type to the next, so be clear what you want from the start.
Guards, iron doors, laser-cut and wrought iron.
For stairs, balconies and plot boundaries.
Car parking, storage, sheds on plots.
Ask for an anti-rust primer and a heat-suited paint on doors and shades in the sun.
If your land is low or near a flood channel, keep the shade or shed bases above the usual water level.
Fitting dates near Hajj need care: once the permit period starts (check the official announcement from the authorities before Hajj season) only permit holders, Makkah-iqama residents and holy-sites workers can drive in. A workshop in Jeddah could finish your gate and then be unable to deliver it.
Look over welds and bolts after summer and after any heavy rain.
Ask before the deposit, and get the answers in a message.
Inside the city means they can still deliver in the pre-Hajj weeks and come back for a weld later.
Get it on the quote.
For iron in the sun, ask exactly what type.
On iron doors, fitting can add SAR 300–800.
For shades and sheds, especially on low ground.
And what's covered if a weld cracks or the paint lifts?
One alone may be nothing; two are worth thinking about.
Often lighter-gauge steel, or the primer coat skipped.
No emergency opening puts your family at risk.
On land that might flood, that's a gamble.
Hard to compare quotes or hold them to it.
