A carpenter in Makkah: before you take the bedroom apart

Plenty of Makkah families move between rented flats, and each move means taking furniture apart and putting it back: an IKEA or large Turkish bedroom…

Have these ready before you contact the carpenter

The clearer your details, the tighter the quote and the quicker the job.

What make is the bedroom set?

IKEA, Italian, Turkish, Chinese, or locally made? Photograph the label or inside a drawer. Prices vary a lot by type.

Measure the new kitchen wall

Wall length, where the sink and sockets are. A kitchen moving between flats usually needs cutting down or adding to.

Bag the screws

If you've already taken a piece apart, bag its screws and write the piece's name on it. Lost screws slow the refit.

Look for termites

Fine powder under a wardrobe, or mud trails up the wall? Photograph them. Infested furniture shouldn't go to the new flat until it's treated.

Wood problems in Makkah

Some come from heat and dryness, some from being taken apart too often.

Termites in an old house's doors

Makkah carpenters warn about termites, especially in older houses and wood touching the floor. If you see signs, get it treated before anything new is fitted.

A wooden door split or warped

Dry heat pulls moisture out of wood, and a door in the sun can split or bow. Sometimes adjusting is enough; sometimes it needs replacing.

Bedroom set wobbles after the move

Every time it's taken apart, the screw holes in particle board widen. A good carpenter strengthens them with dowels or bigger screws.

Wardrobe doors won't line up

The hinges have dropped or the new flat's floor isn't level. A small adjustment fixes it.

Kitchen won't fit the new wall

Flat sizes differ. It needs cutting or extra units, and the carpenter should measure before pricing.

Locked door, lost key

Simple to open with an ordinary lock, dearer with a security lock.

The furniture type changes the job

Tell the carpenter up front, so they bring the right tools and allow the right time.

IKEA and flat-pack

Numbered parts and a booklet.

  • Keep the booklet or photograph the model number.
  • Repeated taking apart tires particle board, so ask for the holes to be reinforced.
  • Assembling new from the box costs less than taking apart and refitting.

Large Turkish and Italian sets

Heavy pieces, mirrors and sliding doors.

  • Needs at least two people and a suitable vehicle.
  • Ask whether dismantling and wrapping are in the price.
  • Mirrors and glass get wrapped separately.

Kitchens and built-in wardrobes

Made to measure.

  • Moving to another flat usually means adjustments.
  • Agree the price for extra work beforehand.
  • Check the wall can take wall-hung units.

Moving day

Sort it out with the movers

Agree who takes things apart: the carpenter or the removal crew? Better if the carpenter dismantles and refits, so a missing piece is on them.

Mind Hajj season

Moving flats in the weeks leading to Hajj? Outsiders need a permit to get into the city from a date the authorities announce each year (check the official announcement before Hajj season; a Makkah iqama or holy-sites work permit is exempt), so pick a carpenter who already lives here.

Heat on the day

In summer, move early in the morning. Wood and glue don't like a closed van in the sun.

Empty new flat

Have the carpenter fit things before the boxes and other furniture arrive; it goes faster.

Questions for the carpenter

Send them with photos before they price it.

  1. Do you live in Makkah?

Especially if the move is close to Hajj season.

  2. Does the price cover taking apart and refitting?

    Some price each half separately.

  3. Have you worked on this make?

IKEA and large Turkish sets each have their tricks; experience saves time.

  4. What if a piece breaks?

Who's responsible, and can they repair it or make a replacement?

  5. Will you reinforce worn holes?

Important for furniture that's been moved more than once.

  6. How long will it take?

Bedroom and kitchen in one day, or two?

Be careful of these

Not proof on their own, but worth a question.

Takes things apart without marking them

The refit becomes guesswork, and you end up with crooked doors.

Fits termite-hit furniture in the new flat

The problem moves with you. Ask for treatment first.

Raises the price once it's apart

Agree the whole amount before the first screw comes out.

Hangs a wall cabinet without checking the wall

Full cabinets are heavy, and the wall has to take them.
