Shading your car or roof in Makkah: material first, colour later

Makkah stays hot for much of the year, the sun is hard on fabric and steel, some high schemes near the mountains catch strong wind, and the little…

Work these out before the first call

Firms quote better when you can answer these straight away.

Measurements

For a shade: the length, width and height you want. For screening: how long the parapet or wall runs, and how much height to add on top. Photograph the spot from several angles.

How many cars?

A shade for one car is a different job from one for three. Think about the next car and visitors before fixing the size.

Where the sun comes from

The afternoon sun from the west is the harshest on the car and yard. Tell the firm where you want shade in the afternoon.

What it fixes to

A wall? A concrete floor? Soil? That decides the bases and bolts.

🏢 In a block of flats or a compound, ask the landlord or management before any roof screening or a shade over shared parking goes up.

Shade and screen problems in Makkah

They come up because the material or the fitting didn't suit Makkah's climate.

Fabric faded and tore

Makkah's sun is strong, and fabric without UV resistance loses colour and weakens fast. Ask for the material's specification and its guarantee.

A shade that shakes in the wind

Some firms say exposed high schemes such as Wali Al-Ahd, Ash-Sharai and An-Nawwariyah get strong wind. Bases and tensioning need to be stronger there.

Rain pouring onto the door

Too shallow a slope, or the gutter forgotten. Rain is scarce here, yet one hard shower can pool on a nearly flat canopy.

A screen too hot to touch

Dark steel in the sun gets very hot. A light colour or heat-suited paint helps, especially where children play.

Rust at the bolts

Steel without galvanising or oven-baked paint rusts at the joints. Ask about the steel and the paint before fitting.

Yard timber splitting

Natural wood cracks in the heat. Some people choose composite wood (WPC) for pergolas and screens because it holds up better.

Which material suits you?

The difference is price, lifespan, and which copes with sun best.

Car shades

PVC, HDPE, Lexan or iron.

  • PVC is waterproof and fine for the occasional rain.
  • HDPE is an open mesh: breezier and cooler underneath, though rain gets through.
  • Lexan lets some light through; iron is heavier and lasts longer.

Roof and yard screens

Fabric, iron slats or woven iron, wood, plastic.

  • Fabric is cheaper and lighter, with a shorter life.
  • Galvanised steel is stronger; ask the thickness.
  • Ask about the height allowed in your building or district.

Pergolas, garden and pool shades

Wood, composite wood, fabric.

  • Composite wood copes with heat better than natural timber.
  • Pool shades need a material that stands water and chlorine.
  • Ask about the roof: clear, solid or slatted.

Sun, wind and rain

Solid bases

Where the wind hits, ask for concrete bases or anchor bolts set into concrete, not just fixing to the tiles.

Fall and gutter

Agree which side the runoff drops, well clear of doorways and parked cars.

Low ground

If the yard takes water during flash floods, raise the bases a little and keep wiring off the ground.

The weeks before Hajj

Fitting crews coming from Jeddah or Taif need a permit to enter in the run-in to Hajj; for a date then, choose a firm whose workshop is in Makkah.

Questions for the shade firm

Have the answers written into the quote.

  1. When you say 'per metre', which metre?

Square and running metres give very different totals, and some price pages don't say.

  2. What fabric, and what weight?

For example Korean PVC, its weight in grams, and its sun resistance.

  3. Galvanised steel? And the paint?

Oven-baked or powder paint beats ordinary paint in the sun.

  4. Are fitting and bases included?

Some quotes cover only fabric and frame.

  5. What does the guarantee cover, for how long?

Frame, paint and fabric may each have a different guarantee.

  6. How many days to fit?

A car shade usually takes a day; big screens two to three.

Warning signs

Not all mean bad faith, but each is worth one more question.

A per-metre price that doesn't say square or running

The bill could come out double what you expected.

A long guarantee on cheap fabric

Ask for the guarantee in writing with the material named.

Fixed to tiles with no concrete

The first strong wind can rip the shade off.

No fall for the rain

Water will pool and weigh the fabric down.

Common questions

How much is a car shade in Makkah?

Material decides it: Makkah firms advertise PVC at SAR 85–110 per m², HDPE 70–90, fabric 100–150, iron 150–220 and Lexan 180–250 per metre.

PVC or HDPE?

PVC keeps rain off and gives full shade; HDPE is a mesh that lets air through and cuts heat but doesn't stop rain. Both are common in Makkah.

Do I need permission for a roof screen?

In a block or compound, ask the landlord or management first. For a standalone house, ask the firm about the usual height and municipal rules.
