How to choose a personal trainer in Saudi Arabia

Many people sign up because a trainer's account looks good, and quit two weeks later. Before you pay: pin down your goal, check the licence, try one…

Before you search: decide three things

Half the problem is solved once you know exactly what you want.

What's your goal?

Weight loss, strength, general fitness, coming back from an injury, preparing for birth? Each needs a trainer with experience in it. Write it in one sentence and send it with your first message.

Where will you train?

At home, in a gym, outdoors or online? The place changes the price and the equipment you need.

How many days can you really keep up?

Two fixed days beat five days you drop after a week. Give the trainer your real schedule and let them plan around it.

Any illness or injury?

Diabetes, blood pressure, back, knee, pregnancy? Say so in your first message. With a medical condition, ask your doctor before you start.

Types of trainer: who suits you?

The specialities you'll find on Laqeeni. One trainer can cover more than one.

Weight loss

A movement and exercise plan with follow-up. Ask about food advice, but don't accept crash diets without a nutrition professional.

Strength and muscle

Weight training with gradual progress. Good if you know the basics, or want to learn the lifts properly from day one.

Yoga and pilates

For flexibility, balance and your back. Works well at home because it needs very little space.

Boxing and martial arts

Fitness and stress relief. Check that the trainer teaches protection and safety before hitting.

Pre- and post-natal

Gentle, specific exercise. You need your doctor's approval and a trainer with real experience here.

Back to training after injury

A trainer carries on after physiotherapy; they don't replace it. Ask them to talk to your therapist if they can.

Seniors and kids

Needs patience and an age-appropriate plan. Ask about their experience with the same group.

Swimming

Check the venue is safe and a lifeguard is present, especially for children.

EMS (electrical muscle stimulation)

Sessions in a pad suit that sends a light current into your muscles. Some people should avoid it, such as anyone with a pacemaker, women who are pregnant, or people with epilepsy, so see your doctor and get a health check before booking a first session.

The first session: try before you commit

Agree a trial session

One session, clear price, no package. Decide afterwards. Some gyms give the first session free when you join, so ask.

Notice their questions

A good trainer asks about your health, injuries and goal before giving you any exercise.

Look for coaching, not exhaustion

A good session isn't one you can barely walk after. It's one where you feel you're learning a movement properly.

Put the deal in writing

Number of sessions, length, price, and how to move or cancel. A WhatsApp message is enough.

Questions to ask the trainer

A serious trainer welcomes them. If they get annoyed, that tells you something.

  1. What's your licence number and expiry date?

A licensed trainer gives it without hesitating. The details are in our guide on checking a trainer's licence.

  2. Do you hold a first aid certificate?

They should know what to do if someone faints or pulls a muscle.

  3. How many sessions do you expect I'll need?

An honest trainer gives an estimate and says results differ from person to person.

  4. What happens if I'm late or cancel?

Know the cancellation policy before you start, not after the first disagreement.

  5. How will you track my progress?

Measurements, photos or weights lifted. With no clear method, progress is just a feeling.

Warning signs

One sign proves nothing, but don't ignore it.

Promises big weight loss in a week

Nobody can guarantee that speed. Big promises are usually marketing.

Sells you supplements or pills

A trainer's job is training. Ask your doctor or a nutrition professional about any supplement, and don't buy from the trainer.

Doesn't ask about your health

A ready-made plan without knowing your injuries is risky.

Wants all the money upfront

Paying for a long package on day one leaves you exposed if the deal changes. Start with one session or a small package.

Ignores pain

"Push through, pain is normal" is a dangerous sentence. Sharp pain means stop.

No licence, or dodges the question

Don't get into details. Pick someone else.

A guide only

Before you pay: what's in the price?

A cheap price isn't always cheap. Compare on the same basis.

ItemWhat to check
Session length30 minutes is not 50 or 60. Compare the price per minute.
LocationDoes the trainer come to you? Is there extra travel cost? A gym entry fee?
PackageHow many sessions, and within how many months must you use them? Some packages expire.
EquipmentDo you need to buy anything, or does the trainer bring it?
Cancelling and movingHow many hours before a session can you cancel without losing it?

💡 Real figures are in our guide to personal trainer prices in Riyadh.

These are points to compare, not prices. Laqeeni doesn't set trainers' prices or take commission. The deal is between you and the trainer.

Common questions

What's the difference between a personal trainer and a gym coach?

A personal trainer builds a plan for you and follows your progress. A gym coach usually helps everyone and answers general questions.

How often do I need a session?

It depends on your goal and time. Many people start with two a week, and the trainer adjusts after a few weeks.

Can I pay for just one session?

Ask the trainer. A trial session is a good idea before any package.

Why doesn't Laqeeni list every trainer?

We only list a trainer whose licence is valid, and we show the licence number and expiry date on their page.
