Training at home, in a gym or online: which is for you?

The best option is the one you'll stick with. Some people want a gym's machines, others don't want to leave the house. See the comparison and answer…

Five questions that decide it

Answer quickly and see where you lean.

Do you have space at home?

Two metres by two is enough for most exercises. If not, a gym, online or outdoors.

Does privacy matter?

Home and online give the most privacy, and a female trainer can coach you without you leaving the house.

Do you want machines and weights?

A gym has them. At home you need simple kit (bands, dumbbells, a mat).

How much of a trip can you take?

Riyadh traffic eats time. A home or online trainer saves the trip.

Do you like being outdoors?

Walking and running outside is great in winter, but summer needs early morning or after sunset.

Heat and timing in Riyadh

A few things that help you stay consistent.

Summer

Midday and afternoon are very hot. Train outside before sunrise or after sunset.

Winter

Lovely weather for walking, running and outdoor sessions.

Traffic

Choose a trainer close to you, or go for home or online.

Ramadan

Many people train an hour or more after iftar. Agree a time with the trainer that suits you.

The comparison

Each option with its pros and cons.

At home

The trainer comes to you.

  • Privacy, comfort, no trip.
  • You need space and simple kit.
  • There may be a travel charge.

In a gym

A session inside the gym.

  • Full machines and weights.
  • You may need a membership or entry fee.
  • Motivating atmosphere, sometimes crowded.

Outdoors

A park, a walkway or a track.

  • Fresh air and a change of scene.
  • Summer is hot: early morning or after sunset.
  • You need a safe place.

Online

A video call.

  • Usually cheaper, no trip.
  • The trainer can't touch or correct from a distance.
  • Suits you if you know the basics.

Tips for choosing

Try a session

If you can, try the same trainer in two settings and see where you stay consistent.

Start simple

At home, start with a mat and a light weight. You don't need a full gym.

Online? Set up the camera

The camera should see all of you, with good light and a steady connection.

Ask for a backup plan

If it's too hot or you're tired, the trainer can move the session to another place or online.

Questions to ask the trainer

Before you agree on the place.

  1. Where do you train?

Home, gym, outdoors, online? And in which districts?

  2. What equipment do you bring?

And whether I need to buy anything.

  3. How do you correct my moves online?

A good trainer explains their method and tells you where to put the camera.

  4. What's the policy if the weather is too hot?

    Agree it before you start.

Warning signs

Whatever the place.

Training outdoors in summer midday

Risk of heatstroke and dehydration. Pick a cooler time.

A gym with no first aid

Ask where it is and who is responsible.

Online with the trainer not watching

They must see your movement to correct it.

A home trainer who wants your address before you've agreed

Share the exact location only after you decide to book.

EMS (electrical muscle stimulation) training with no health check

It isn't suitable for everyone: for example, not with a pacemaker, during pregnancy or with epilepsy. You need a health check and your doctor's advice before you start, at home or in a studio.

Common questions

Which is best for a beginner?

The one you'll stick with. Many start at home, or with a trainer in a gym until they learn the movements.

Does online work for women?

Yes, and it's a good option for privacy. Pick a trainer who can correct your form through the camera.

Can the same trainer train in more than one place?

Yes. A trainer on Laqeeni chooses where they train, and the location filter shows you the options.

What do I need to train at home?

A small space, a mat and trainers. The trainer will tell you if you need anything else.
