Before you book a handyman in Riyadh

Curtains, a shelf, a squeaky door and a list of small jobs? Before you book, read this: how to prepare your list, what a handyman does and what needs a specialist, and the questions that make the visit worth it.

Before you book

Get these ready so everything gets done in one visit.

One list

Put every small job on one list, with photos and measurements.

Wall type

Block or gypsum board? Tell the handyman so they bring the right screws and plugs for the weight.

Electrics or big plumbing?

Take those off the list. Sockets and wiring are for an electrician, big leaks for a plumber.

Do you have the parts?

A curtain, a shelf, a mixer tap? Decide whether you or the handyman buys them.

What often goes wrong

Most problems come from something that wasn't agreed at the start.

The shelf or mirror fell down

The fixings didn't suit the weight or the wall. Tell the handyman the weight and the wall type first.

The curtain rail is crooked

The holes weren't level. Ask them to use a spirit level before drilling.

A job too big for a handyman

Electrics or a big leak are better done by a specialist. A wrong job costs more in the end.

The price wasn't what you expected

The list wasn't clear, or nobody agreed who buys the parts.

Dust and mess left behind

Cleaning up after drilling wasn't agreed.

Ran out of time

A long list with no order. Start with what matters most.

What a handyman does, and what needs a specialist

A handyman does varied small jobs. Leave bigger work to a specialist.

Curtains and rails

It needs accurate, level drilling. The handyman brings screws and plugs to suit your wall.

Shelves, pictures and mirrors

What matters is fixings that suit the weight and the wall type (block or gypsum board).

A door that squeaks or won't close

Usually loose hinges or it needs oiling. Usually quick.

Simple plumbing

Changing a mixer tap, shower head or flush. Leave bigger leaks to a plumber.

Filling holes and touch-up paint

Filling old screw holes and a touch of paint afterwards.

Electrics: for an electrician

Changing an ordinary bulb is fine. Sockets, switches and wiring are a job for a qualified electrician.

On the day of the visit

Clear the space

Move furniture and things out of the way before they come; it goes faster.

Most important first

Put the list in order, so the important jobs are done if time runs out.

Keep a few tools

A screwdriver, a tape measure and some tape help with small jobs. Leave anything electrical to a specialist.

Don't put off small jobs

A loose door or a dripping tap: fix it early, before it grows.

Questions to ask a handyman

Ask before the visit. A good handyman won't mind.

  1. Per job or per hour?

Agree how you'll be charged at the start, and get the price on WhatsApp.

  2. What's the price for the whole list?

Send every job with photos and measurements before they come, so they bring the right tools and parts.

  3. Who supplies the parts?

Screws, plugs and parts: you or them? At what price?

  4. What can you do, and what needs a specialist?

So nothing in electrics or plumbing is done wrong.

  5. Will you clean up?

Will they clean the dust and take away the mess when they finish?

  6. Has anyone I know used you?

Look for genuine reviews or ask someone who has used them.

Warning signs

One sign on its own doesn't prove anything, but take care if you see them.

Says they can do everything

Even wiring and big leaks. Those are for a specialist.

Doesn't ask about weight or wall type

Before hanging something heavy like a mirror or a bookshelf.

No price for the list

If they say "we'll see later" and just start, think twice.

Leaves the dust behind

Agree the clean-up at the start.

Rough guide

Rough prices (a guide only)

Rough prices. Use them to spot a quote that's way off, not as fixed prices. Most handymen charge per job or per visit; the price goes up if they need to drill concrete or supply parts.
