Before you install CCTV at home in Riyadh

Want to see your home from your phone when you're out? Before you agree with anyone, read this: what to decide first, the difference between wired and Wi-Fi, and the questions that keep your cameras secure and respect your neighbours' privacy.

Before you call anyone

Decide these before you ask for a price.

What do you want to cover?

Doors, entrances, the car park. Your own home only.

How many cameras?

A flat usually needs 2 to 4, a villa usually 4 to 8.

Internet and router

Where's the router? Is the internet strong where the cameras will go?

How many days of recording?

Decide how many days you want recordings kept, for the hard drive.

🏠 Cameras should cover your own home and entrances only. Never point them into neighbours' homes or windows.

Common problems and what usually causes them

Know them before, so you can ask the installer about them.

Black or blurry picture at night

The camera has weak night vision, or lights reflect into it. Colour night-vision cameras make a big difference.

Can't see the cameras on your phone

Usually the internet dropped or the router changed. Ask the installer to show you how to reconnect.

Recordings get deleted quickly

The hard drive is small. Ask how many days it holds, and upgrade it if you want longer.

A camera keeps switching off

Usually the power adapter or the cable. Sun and heat wear out exposed adapters.

Dull picture or dust on it

Riyadh dust covers the lens. Have the installer clean high cameras, or wipe ones you can reach safely from the ground with a soft cloth.

The angle doesn't cover the spot

Plan the camera positions with the installer first: doors, entrances and the car park.

Wired or Wi-Fi: what's different

Choose by your home and the cabling.

Wired

More reliable, and better for villas.

  • Needs cabling; ask if it's hidden in conduit.
  • Ask whether the price includes all the cabling.
  • Keep the recorder somewhere safe.

Wi-Fi

Easier for flats, with less cabling.

  • Depends on your internet strength.
  • Change the default password.
  • Check where each camera will get power.

Tips for home cameras

Respect your neighbours' privacy

Point cameras at your own home and entrances, not at neighbours' houses or windows.

Clean lenses

Outdoor cameras need the dust cleaned off every few months. Leave high ones to the installer.

Strong passwords

Use a strong password for the app and recorder, and don't share it.

Test the recordings

Now and then, play back an old recording and check every camera is recording.

Questions to ask a CCTV installer

Ask before you agree. A good installer won't mind.

  1. Which brand and resolution?

Ask about the brand of cameras and recorder, and the resolution (2, 4 or 8 MP).

  2. How many days does it keep recordings?

And is there a phone app in Arabic or English?

  3. Are the cables hidden?

Are they in conduit? Does the price include all the cabling?

  4. Will you change the password?

Ask them to change the default password and give it to you, so nobody else can get into your cameras.

  5. What warranty and support?

How long is the warranty, and will they come back if a camera stops?

  6. Can I see past work?

Look at past work and genuine reviews from earlier customers.

Warning signs

One sign on its own doesn't prove anything, but take care if you see them.

Points a camera at the neighbours

Cameras are for your own home and entrances. Ask them to change the angle.

Leaves the default password

Anyone could get into your cameras. Ask them to change it.

A price with no hard drive

Then you find nothing is saved. Ask first.

Cables exposed to the sun

They wear out fast. Ask for conduit.

Rough guide

Rough prices (a guide only)

Rough prices for homes. Use them to spot a quote that's way off, not as fixed prices. The final price depends on the number and resolution of the cameras, the recorder and the length of the cabling.

ServiceRough price
4 cameras with recorder, installedSAR 1,200 – 2,800
8 cameras with recorder, installedSAR 2,000 – 3,500
Installation only (your own cameras)SAR 700 – 1,500

💡 Ask whether the price includes the hard drive (storage), how many days it records, and whether there's an app to watch from your phone.

🔌 Wired cameras are usually more reliable than Wi-Fi, but need cabling. Wi-Fi is easier to fit, but depends on your internet.

A rough guide from 5 sources in Riyadh (October 2026), including averages of real jobs by Riyadh customers and companies' price pages. The final price is agreed between you and the installer. Laqeeni doesn't set prices or take commission.
