Quick checks before you call anyone

They help you explain the job clearly and get a more accurate price.

Rough measurements

Measure the width and height of the door, window or stairs. It helps the blacksmith give you a first price.

Take photos

Photograph what you want or what's broken, close up and from a distance, and send them before the visit.

Check for rust

Rust at the welds or under the paint? Note it so they come prepared.

Power nearby

Welding needs electricity. Check there's a socket close to where the work is.

🚫 Don't try to weld or cut steel yourself, and don't lift a heavy door on your own. Leave it to the blacksmith.

Common problems and what usually causes them

Only the blacksmith can say for sure, but this helps you understand what they tell you.

Steel door is heavy or scrapes the floor

The hinges are worn or the door has dropped under its weight. New or adjusted hinges usually fix it.

Rust is spreading

The paint had no anti-rust primer, or water sits on the steel. It needs cleaning and repainting.

A weld has broken

The weld was weak or the steel is tired. It needs re-welding; ask if it needs strengthening.

Lock or bolt won't close

The door has dropped or the lock is worn. Adjust the door or replace the lock.

Railing moves

The fixing into the floor or wall has come loose. It's a danger for children, so fix it soon.

Gate squeaks when it opens

The hinges or wheels need grease or replacing.

What a blacksmith does

Most jobs fall into these types, and the price varies a lot between them.

Doors and gates

Entrances, villa gates, back doors.

  • Ask about the steel thickness and the hinges.
  • Laser-cut and wrought iron cost more than plain.
  • Electric gates need a separate motor.

Grilles and railings

For windows, stairs and balconies.

  • Make sure grilles open from inside in an emergency.
  • Railings must be solid and high enough for children.
  • Ask about the paint.

Repairs and welding

Hinges, broken welds, door adjustments.

  • Most blacksmiths come with mobile equipment.
  • Agree the visit price before they come.
  • Ask if painting after welding is included.

Make your metalwork last

Check for rust every year

If you see a small rust spot, clean and paint it quickly before it spreads.

Oil the hinges

A drop of oil on the hinges every few months keeps the door light and quiet.

Don't let water sit

Dry the steel if it gets wet, especially at the welds and near the ground.

Repaint every few years

The Riyadh sun breaks down paint. Repainting protects the steel from rust.

Questions to ask a blacksmith

Ask before you agree. A good blacksmith won't mind.

  1. How thick is the steel?

Ask about the steel thickness and section, and get it written in the quote.

  2. What paint do you use?

Is there an anti-rust primer under the colour, or just one coat?

  3. Is fitting included?

Ask if the price includes making, fitting and painting.

  4. Will you measure?

Let the blacksmith measure themselves, so any mistake is theirs.

  5. What guarantee do I get?

How long on the welding, the paint and the hinges?

  6. Can I see older work?

Ask for photos of past jobs, or look at something they fitted for someone you know.

Warning signs

One sign on its own doesn't prove anything, but take care if you see them.

A quote far below the others

Usually thinner steel or paint with no primer. Ask about the thickness and the paint.

Wants all the money upfront

A reasonable deposit is normal, but don't pay everything before fitting.

Window grilles that don't open from inside

Dangerous in a fire. Ask for a section that opens from inside.

No written guarantee

On the welding, the paint and the hinges.

Rough guide

Rough prices (a guide only)

Use these to spot a quote that's way off, not as fixed prices. The price varies a lot with the steel thickness, the design (plain, laser-cut or wrought iron) and the paint.

ServiceRough price
Steel window grilleSAR 300 – 800 per window
Plain steel railingSAR 160 – 500 per metre
Laser-cut or wrought iron railingSAR 500 – 1,000 per metre
Plain steel villa gate (about 4 × 2.5 m)SAR 3,000 – 6,000

💡 A quote far below the others usually means thinner steel or paint with no anti-rust primer. Ask about the thickness and the paint.

🔧 For small repairs (welding, hinges), agree the price on the phone before they come, and ask if there's a call-out fee.

A rough guide from 2 sources in Saudi Arabia (2026): a metalwork price guide and a Riyadh blacksmith's ad on Haraj. That's why the ranges are wide. The final price is agreed between you and the blacksmith. Laqeeni doesn't set prices or take commission.

Common questions

Does the blacksmith come to my home, or do I go to the workshop?

For repairs and welding, most blacksmiths come with mobile equipment. For new doors and gates, they measure at your home, make it in the workshop and come back to fit it.

How long does a new door or gate take?

Usually one to two weeks, depending on the design and how busy the workshop is.

Does Laqeeni take commission?

No. Laqeeni is a directory that connects you with the blacksmith directly. You agree and pay between you.
