Before you book movers in Riyadh

Moving home? Before you book, read this: what to prepare first, what pushes the price up, what tends to go wrong on moving day, and the questions that protect your things.

Before you book

Get these ready before you ask for a price. The price will be more accurate and there'll be fewer surprises.

What's going?

Sell or donate anything you won't use before the move. Fewer things, lower price.

Count the big items

Rooms, wardrobes, beds, big appliances, and how many ACs need taking down and refitting.

Floors and lifts

At both homes: which floor, and is there a lift? Tell the mover from the start.

Take photos

Photos or a video of each room help the mover give a more accurate price than a guess over the phone.

What often goes wrong on moving day

Most problems come from something that wasn't written down or agreed at the start.

The price goes up on the day

Packing, a crane or the ACs weren't in the price. Get everything in writing.

Something gets broken

Mirrors, glass, ornaments and big appliances need special wrapping and more care.

Fewer workers or a smaller truck

Than agreed, so the move takes longer. Fix the number of workers and the truck size.

Furniture not put back together

Big wardrobes and beds need a carpenter. Ask whether reassembly at the new home is included.

The ACs

Taking down and refitting ACs needs an AC technician and is usually priced separately.

The move takes longer

Within Riyadh it's usually a fixed price, but traffic and rush hour can make the job longer.

Flat or villa, lift or stairs: what's different

The size of the home and the floors change the number of workers, the time and the price.

Flat with a lift

Usually easier and quicker.

  • Measure big furniture: will it fit in the lift?
  • Ask your building if there's anything to arrange for moving day (like lift times).
  • Tell the mover the floor number at both homes.

Flat with no lift

Stairs mean more workers and more time.

  • Say so from the start. Stairs push the price up, sometimes by a lot.
  • Some large furniture needs a crane. Ask if that's in the price.
  • Cut down what you're taking as much as you can.

Villa

More things, big wardrobes, and usually more ACs.

  • Let them see the home before they give a price.
  • Ask about a carpenter for dismantling and assembly, and an AC technician.
  • Don't forget outdoor things: the yard, the roof and the storeroom.

Getting ready for moving day

One box per room

Write the room name on every box so the workers put it in the right place.

A first-night bag

Clothes, chargers, medicines and important papers, kept with you, not on the truck.

Keep valuables with you

Jewellery, important documents and small expensive devices: move them yourself.

Take photos first

Photograph valuable furniture before it's wrapped, so you can prove any damage.

Questions to ask a mover

Ask before you confirm the booking. A good mover won't mind.

  1. Can you see my things before giving a price?

A visit, or photos and a video of your home, gets a more accurate price than a guess over the phone.

  2. What does the price include?

Packing? Dismantling and assembly? ACs? A crane? Get it all in writing on WhatsApp.

  3. What if something breaks?

Ask about compensation or a guarantee on your things before moving day, not after.

  4. How many workers, and what size truck?

Agree the day, the time, the number of workers and the size of the truck.

  5. Will you put the furniture back together?

Big wardrobes and beds need a carpenter. Make sure it's included.

  6. Can I pay a deposit and the rest at the end?

Best to pay a small deposit and the rest once everything has arrived and been put together.

Warning signs

One sign on its own doesn't prove anything, but take care if you see them.

Gives a price without seeing anything

A phone price with no photos or visit often changes on moving day.

Won't write down what's included

If they won't write down packing, assembly and the ACs, think twice.

Wants full payment before the move

If you pay everything first, you have nothing left to hold back if there's damage or delay.

No clear answer about breakages

Ask before. If there's no clear answer, take care.
